That was quite a disappearing act – now for my next trick…

Actually I have been very busy with assignments (4 due on one day, cumulatively worth 360%), various financial crises (Studylink invalidated my student allowance, didn’t pay me for three weeks then charged me $817 in ‘overpayments’) and family matters (which I won’t go into, save to say that I now support any political party which, if in power, would require all two-year-olds to be on a leash at all times). Then today, to top it all off, I was involved in a car crash (not my fault – honest!). I still have one assignment due on Friday, but I’ve asked for, and been given an extension for one week. Hence the fact I can actually sit down for five minutes and write something.

Anyway, 4 months into the Honours course, and things are a lot busier than I expected. I have to say I have learned a lot from the courses I’ve done and I would like to blog a bit about some of that learning soon (fingers crossed!).

I’ll also try to post a couple of items I wrote and saved as drafts a couple of months back. Following from the posts by Patti and Karen I wrote a bit of a blurb about how I came to study OT, but it needs a bit of a polish seeing as it hasn’t seen the light of day for a while…

I also want to blog a bit about virtual worlds if I can find the time. In our Web 2.0 group next week we’ll be doing some stuff in Second Life – I find it quite second nature with my previous involvement in MMO’s like World of Warcraft, but other group members find it weird and creepy – I’d like to explore that a bit and look at some of the pros and cons – and there are definitely some cons – otherwise sites like this and this wouldn’t exist…

But I still have one more assignment…

Anyway, now I’m sitting down to blog for at least a few minutes. I might also try to put together a page about my character in World of Warcraft. It might get me blogging more often anyway and it’s a good chance to practice with page making and seeing what I can do with this blog

At the group session on Monday, we started to make some connections with other people’s blogs – it seems to be the way to get other people looking at what you’re writing. I’ve noticed spikes in the number of visitors I’m getting since this project began (although there’s not much here to read yet!) and hopefully this will snowball as I begin to create some links of my own…

I’m going to try and start posting with some more mundane happenings and I’ll try to put up a post about some of the clinical reasoning things I’ve been looking at in my latest assignment… I will do this tonight!!!

I’m in the middle of one of our group sessions and we’re learning more about blogging and using WordPress efficiently – there’s so much to learn, even for an ‘old hand’ like me. I’ve been using computers since I was seven years old, but technology keeps on changing and it’s hard to keep up…

I don’t kid myself that I have anything particularly witty or interesting to say, this is more like an experiment with a purpose. I’m an Honours student in Occupational Therapy in New Zealand, and my dissertation is going to be based around Web 2.0 tools, including blogs. So I thought I’d better get with the program and actually try to keep a blog. This is quite funny if you know me at all, considering I have tried and failed to keep any kind of diary for any significant length of time many, many, many times.

About the blog title: I’m not a particularly vindictive person – it’s part of a quote from a Terry Pratchett book. You know the old Chinese proverb:

“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime”

The Terry Pratchett version runs something like:

“Give a man fire and he’s warm for a day; set a man on fire and he’s warm for the rest of his life”

Pragmatic and funny.
